FUNDING FOR CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS Small Grants Program The Small Grants Program (SmGP) is one of several facilities through which the World Bank provides grants to NGOs and other organizations of civil society. The SmGP aims to make development more inclusive and equitable by providing funds for activities that support the civic engagement of marginalized and vulnerable groups. The SmGP in Moldova is managed by the Country Office in Chisinau. Between 1997-2005, grants to Moldovan NGOs amounted to approximately USD 300 thousand for 78 projects (44 - national NGOs and 34 - local NGOs).  More on Small Grants Program in Moldova

Development Market Place The World Bank also funds civil society organizations through periodic events known as Development Marketplaces. These events, held at the global, regional, or country level, aim to identify and support innovative development ideas and build synergies between the various players in the field. During the DM, social innovators with new ideas are awarded small grants through a competitive process. A Knowledge Forum enables various leaders in the development community to share their experiences around important development themes and provide the participants with networking opportunities. Proposals accepted by the Development Marketplace have to be submitted in partnership with at least one other organization - e.g., an NGO partnering with another NGO, bilateral/multilateral development agency (including from the UN family), government, academic/research institution or foundation, or private business. Proposals submitted can address a multiplicity of issues from sustainable development to information technology. Between 1997 and 2004, the World Bank's Small Grants Program offered $ 262,740 67 NGOs for 64 projects. Eight NGOs obtained financial assistance worth more than $ 150,000 as part of the World Bank's innovative ideas contests held in 2000 and 2003. 400 NGOs of which 178 local were involved in the participatory process to formulate the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper. 28 NGOs were invited in July 1998 for a discussion of the new CAS to be implemented by the WB in Moldova in 1999-2000. Leaders of over 50 organizations of civil society (NGOs, academic circles and trade unions) participated in the first stage of consultations of the World Bank new assistance strategy for Moldova for 2005-2007. 415 NGOs were created in rural areas under the Rural Investment and Services Project. 440 consultants of the ACSA NGO offer assistance through 35 consulting centers to entrepreneurs from the rural areas under the Rural Investment and Services Project financed by the World Bank. In 2002, 15 representative NGOs and 5 local NGOs participated together with their colleagues from Ukraine and Belarus in the regional project “Social Partnerships – A Paradigm For Success” 12 Moldovan NGOs attended assemblies of NGOs in Vilnius (2000) and Belgrade (2002).
